Battery acid, sedatives may have turned hooch lethal; toll nears 100 | India News

DEHRADUN/MEERUT: A killer alcoholic brew that may have contained urea, traces of battery liquid, caustic soda and possibly large quantities of sedatives has claimed close to 100 lives across UP and Uttarakhand. By Saturday, the total number of dead in Saharanpur, the area worst-affected , stood at 64, with around 50 hospitalised .

The string of deaths was initially reported on Friday from Baalupur village near Bhagwanpur in Roorkee, where a day before on Thursday people from villages in the Saharanpur area as well as those from Bhagwanpur had gathered for a tehravi.

But on Saturday as the toll mounted and deaths of other people were reported, especially those from Saharanpur who had not come for the ceremony, investigating officials said they were trying to piece together afresh the trail of the liquor and where it was brewed and distributed. Haridwar SSP Janmejay Khanduri told TOI, “We have booked seven people who are suspected supplying the spurious liquor. Two persons have died . The remaining five are being interrogated.”
