It includes people traveling from China and Taiwan on Chinese passport too.
As per the data accessed by TOI, about 4000 people have met Dalai Lama which includes 250 Chinese and 330 people from Taiwan traveling on Chinese passport. The number however, excludes those who met him during his tours and teachings outside his residence.
Superintendent of Police of this region, when contacted told TOI that it is a routine that people are always in waiting list seeking audiences and they have to wait for months or a year to meet the noble personality.
Private audiences at exile residence were arranged by Dalai Lama office due to number of requests from devotees across the globe.
But these audiences needs prior approvals from Tibetan and Indian security agencies deputed near the exile residence of Dalai Lama.
One has to undergo tight scrutiny before entering the premises.
Tezin Takla, one of the senior most private secretaries to Dalai Lama when contacted told TOI that thousands of people seeks audiences and office is carrying on time to time.
“The numbers are in thousands, I don’t have exact figures but yes people from various countries keeps visiting him here” he added.
Himachal is lucky to have a global personality like Dalai Lama, but it has failed to take much benefit of it despite that Mcleodganj had turned into a place for Buddhist pilgrimage.
Dalai Lama has arrived in India from Tibet in 1959. But lack of basic infrastructure like roads and parking has always remained the problem of this region from last many years.
Travel industry is now eyeing for Kalachakra teachings by Dalai Lama for this region. Recently a delegation of hoteliers, taxi operators, travel agents and various other wings have met spiritual leader requesting him to organize such teachings here as it attracts about five lakh people from across the globe.
Reacting to the same, Tenzin Takla said that due to the health reasons Dalai Lama is not scheduled for organizing any such teachings as of now and the same has been conveyed to the delegations that came to meet him.
Ministry of external affairs has a special office for Dalai Lama here. Indian spies also keeps monitoring the activities here, while wings of security agencies like IB, CID and police also posted in the region for the same.
