Bhima-Koregaon: SC gives cops more time to file chargesheet | India News

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday set aside the order of the Bombay HC which had refused to grant 90 days’ extension to Maharashtra Police for filing chargesheet in the Bhima-Koregaon case and paved the way for the accused to get bail by default.

As the SC had earlier stayed the HC order, the accused activists could not be released from jail and police subsequently filed chargesheet in the case during the pendency of the case in the SC. Police had arrested lawyer Surendra Gadling, Nagpur University professor Shoma Sen, Dalit activist Sudhir Dhawale, activist Mahesh Raut and Kerala native Rona Wilson in June under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act or UAPA for their alleged links with Maoists.

As police failed to complete the probe within the stipulated 90 days, it had sought extension of time which was granted by the trial court but set aside by the Bombay HC on the plea of the accused.

The state government then approached the SC which finally set aside the HC order and said there was sufficient ground made by the state prosecutor to grant 90 days’ more time to police to complete the probe.
