Berkeley’s new ordinance banning the use of gender-stereotypical words in city documents has mandated to replace them with more gender-neutral alternatives. As such, “bondsman” will be replaced by the non-gendered term “bonds-person,” “manhole” becomes “maintenance hole”, “pregnant woman” becomes “pregnant employee”, “Firemen/women” becomes “firefighters” etc.
