Serena Williams has said she expects to go out in style if this is the end of her days on the court ahead of what is likely the last tournament of her record-breaking career.
For the 23-time Grand Slam champion to wear at the U.S. Open, which got underway Monday, Williams and longtime partner Nike unveiled a number of chic costumes and footwear. Williams will enter the court wearing a dress with a figure skating theme, according to ESPN’s Nick DePaula, adding to her collection of memorable ensembles over the years.
Each of Williams’ previous singles victories at Flushing Meadows will be referenced in the six-layer skirt of the dress, which is covered with hundreds of diamonds. At the age of 17, Williams won the U.S. commenced operations in 1999.

Williams will compete in a unique edition of the NikeCourt Flare 2, the company’s newest statement tennis shoe, that is adorned with diamonds. The solid gold lace deubré on the black shoes has 400 hand-set diamonds, and there is a diamond swoosh on the heel. The word “Queen” will be subtly written on the shoelaces.

Additionally, Nike has given Williams a matching jacket and tote bag that she may use to enter the court. They both have crystal accents that are made to glow brightly in the New York City night.
Williams, who announced in an essay for Vogue earlier this month that she would be quitting tennis, will play Danka Kovini of Montenegro in the U.S. Open’s opening match on Monday night. On ESPN, the game is set to start at 7 p.m. ET.
